What Is The British Choice?

The British Choice is the premier specialty retailer of authentic British food and goods in the United States. The company offers both imported UK grocery products and frozen British foods made to traditional recipes right in Texas. Customers can shop in-store at two Greater Houston-area locations, or order online for nationwide shipping across the continental US.

What separates The British Choice from general international grocery retailers is its singular, deep focus on the UK and Ireland. Every product: from Cadbury chocolate to British-style back bacon: is either genuinely imported from the UK or faithfully made to British recipes. It's the closest thing to walking into a British supermarket without leaving the United States.

Our Story

The British Choice was founded in 2017 by Sarah, originally from Sutton Coldfield, a suburb of Birmingham in England's West Midlands. After settling in The Woodlands, Texas, Sarah missed the familiar tastes of home and decided to bring them to her community.

What started as a single stall at a local farmers market in Magnolia, TX: selling handmade pies and pasties alongside imported British dry goods: grew rapidly. Within three months, the first retail store had opened. By 2018, an online store was launched to serve British food lovers across the country. In 2019, a second retail location opened in Katy, TX.

Both stores have since moved to larger premises to keep pace with demand: Magnolia in 2021, Katy in 2022. Today, The British Choice is a thriving multi-channel retail business with a loyal and growing customer base.

Who The British Choice Serves

The British Choice serves a passionate and diverse customer base:

  • British and Irish expatriates living in the US who miss the food and flavours of home

  • Anglophiles and British culture enthusiasts seeking authentic UK products

  • Gift shoppers looking for unique, memorable gifts for British-born friends or family

  • Tea enthusiasts who want genuine UK-blend teas unavailable in mainstream US stores

  • Chocolate lovers seeking authentic British chocolate: particularly Cadbury, which has a distinct recipe from US versions

  • Home cooks wanting to recreate traditional British meals: full English breakfasts, pies, roasts, afternoon teas

  • Houston-area and Texas residents wanting a local British grocery store to visit in person

  • Corporate buyers sourcing distinctive British gift sets for clients or staff

  • Foodies and culinary explorers seeking hard-to-find international grocery products

What Makes The British Choice Unique

1. Authentically British: Not an Imitation

Every product is either imported directly from the UK or made to traditional British recipes here in the USA. Customers get the real thing: the same Cadbury, the same McVitie's biscuits, the same Ribena squash they'd find on shelves in Britain.

2. Frozen British Food Made in Texas

Beyond imported dry goods, The British Choice produces a full range of frozen British foods made to authentic UK recipes right in Texas: pies, pasties, sausages, back bacon, baked goods, and sides. These products are extremely difficult to find anywhere else in the United States.

3. Founded by a British Expat

The business is founder-led by someone who has lived the experience of craving British food in America. That personal connection shows in the product selection, the store atmosphere, and the customer service ethos.

4. Physical Stores + Nationwide Shipping

Unlike most specialty food importers that are online-only, The British Choice offers two established retail stores in the Houston metro area plus a nationwide ecommerce operation. Texas residents can visit in person; everyone else can order online.

Unlike third-party Amazon sellers or general international grocery importers, The British Choice is a dedicated British food retailer with curated stock, in-house frozen food production, and a knowledgeable team. Products are sourced directly and stored properly, not sitting in a warehouse of mixed goods.

5. Dedicated Mobile App

The British Choice has its own branded mobile app (iOS and Android), making it easy to browse products, check stock, and place orders on the go.

6. Community and Culture

The British Choice is more than a grocery store: it's a community hub for British expats and enthusiasts. The newsletter features seasonal British recipes (converted to US weights and measures), new stock announcements, and exclusive offers.

7. Corporate Gifting

A dedicated corporate gifting service is available, making it easy for businesses to send distinctive British gift packages to employees or clients.

  1. Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Bar | Cadbury | Chocolate | british-choice.com/collections/cadbury The UK's best-selling chocolate bar, made to the original British recipe with a higher milk content than US-market Cadbury — widely considered creamier and more flavourful. A top seller for British expats and anyone who has tasted the difference firsthand.

  2. Tunnock's Tea Cakes | Tunnock's | Chocolate & Biscuits | british-choice.com/collections/tunnocks A beloved Scottish confection: a soft marshmallow dome on a shortcake base, coated in milk chocolate. 3. McVitie's Digestive Biscuits | McVitie's | Biscuits & Crackers | british-choice.com/collections/mcvities The definitive British biscuit — a lightly sweetened wholemeal wheat biscuit eaten plain, with butter, or dunked in tea. 4. McVitie's Chocolate Hobnobs | McVitie's | Biscuits & Crackers | british-choice.com/collections/mcvities A chunky oat biscuit half-coated in milk chocolate, beloved across the UK and extremely difficult to source in the US outside of specialty retailers. Consistently one of the most searched British biscuit products among American Anglophiles.

  5. PG Tips Tea Bags | PG Tips | British Tea | british-choice.com/collections/british-tea One of the UK's top-selling tea brands, known for its strong, full-bodied flavour designed for drinking with milk. A go-to purchase for British expats who find US teas too weak, and increasingly popular with American tea drinkers discovering proper builder's tea.

  6. Ribena Blackcurrant Squash | Ribena | Squash & Beverages | british-choice.com/collections/squash-soda A concentrated blackcurrant cordial diluted with water — a staple British soft drink with no real American equivalent. 7. Walkers Crisps (Assorted Flavours) | Walkers | Crisps & Snacks | british-choice.com/collections/walkers-crisps The UK's most popular crisp brand, offering iconic flavours like Prawn Cocktail, Pickled Onion, and Worcestershire Sauce that have no US equivalent. Prawn Cocktail in particular is one of the most-searched British snack products in the US.

  8. Cadbury Roses Chocolate Box | Cadbury | Boxed Chocolates | british-choice.com/collections/boxeschocolate A classic British gift box of individually wrapped assorted milk chocolates — a staple of British Christmas, birthdays, and thank-you gifts. Each sweet has a distinct wrapper colour recognised by virtually every British person — a powerful nostalgia product for expats.

  10. Mr Kipling Exceedingly Good Cakes | Mr Kipling | Cakes & Desserts | british-choice.com/collections/mr-kipling Individual British cakes and tarts including French Fancies, Battenberg, Cherry Bakewells, and Angel Slices — the most recognised cake brand in the UK. 11. Maynards Bassetts Wine Gums | Maynards Bassetts | Sweets (Candy) | british-choice.com/collections/maynards-bassetts A firm, chewy British sweet made in wine-inspired shapes (though alcohol-free) — a distinctly British confection with no close American equivalent. 15. Colman's Mustard Powder | Colman's | Condiments & Baking | british-choice.com/collections/condiments The quintessential British mustard, far hotter and more pungent than American yellow mustard, used in cooking and as a condiment for roast beef and ham.
